Bump Out Window Replacement
I recently met with a couple in Northbrook who wanted to replace a large picture window in their kitchen. They were shopping for ideas and were getting nowhere with the options presented to them. When I arrived, we sat down at their kitchen table and talked for a while about what they wanted. During our conversation, they mentioned they were expecting their first grandchild. Thinking of the future, they expressed their wish for increasing their eating area but needed to replace the picture window as it had a seal failure, and it obstructed the view of the back yard.
A small room addition was not in their budget, and they wanted to keep the project under $10,000.00. Based on their needs and budget, I suggested a replacement Bump Out Window as that style of window would increase their kitchen eating area by almost 3 feet.
A bump-out replacement window is like a bay window without any angles which provides a greater interior seating space. Using extremely efficient glass with vinyl framing reinforced with foam insulation, the U-Value meeting energy star ratings is .028. Having this energy rating ensures that everyone will stay warm by the window during the cold Chicago winters. Satisfied with Nu-Concepts proposal and solutions, we got to work on replacing their window.
We lowered the opening space to 17" from the floor to provide a comfortable seat level and allows seating space for their future grandkids. Using replacement vinyl windows, we kept the cost in line with their budget and were able to dress up the replacement window by installing custom moldings to match their existing kitchen cabinet motif. We built unique panels that added to the prestige of the Bump Out Window and allowed for the placement of interior lighting. We made the panels out of birch and used fluted moldings to match the existing Perma-Cast columns near their eating island.
We brought more sunlight into their kitchen and increased the view of their backyard by lowering the replacement window. We also changed the Picture Window to include casement windows on each side to increase air circulation. This is especially important in the kitchen.
Our customers were delighted with their new custom Bump Out Window, and we came in under budget at $7000.00. By listening to our customer, Nu-Concepts answered their needs, increased resale value, and living space in their home. See the pictures below to view the final product.
